Lojong (mind training): The Training in Awakened Heart

The traditional Mahayana teachings on lojong were developed over a 300-year period and primarily attributed to a Bengali meditation master named Atisha Dipankara (982-1054 CE). The purpose of mind training is to overcome the habitual tendency to center the world around our self while cultivating the viewpoint and transcendent actions of the warrior-bodhisattva.

Lojong offers time-proven advice for how to cultivate the qualities of generosity, discipline, patience, exertion, meditation and prajna (six paramitas) through the skillful means of reflection on a set of 59 slogans. (Examples of slogans: Be grateful to everyone. Abandon any hope of fruition. Don’t ponder others.)

In this retreat the practice of mindfulness-awareness (shamatha-vipahsyana) will provide the basis for sitting, walking meditation, and mindful movement. Daily dharma talks and contemplation will offer an opportunity to explore and embody these Mahayana teachings – allowing a deep sense of kindness, wisdom, wholeness, and joy to emerge.

Recommended readings:

  • Start Where You Are by Pema Chodron
  • Training in Compassion by Norman Fischer
  • Training the Mind by Chogyam Trungpa

Dathun, Tibetan for “moon session,” is an intensive group meditation retreat for new and experienced meditators interested in deepening their mindfulness-awareness practice through extensive periods of meditation.

Meditation is about learning to recognize our basic goodness in the immediacy of the present moment, and then nurturing this recognition until it seeps into the very core of our being. The practice begins on the cushion and goes beyond the cushion into every aspect of the retreat — including meals, activities during open periods, mandala support roles (cleaning or food prep) and rest.
Composed of two weekly segments called “weekthuns,” this 14-day retreat allows participants to attend either one or two weeks.

For more information about the weeklong meditation opportunity, please visit:  Half-Dathun

  • This program will be taught in English with full Spanish interpretation only for the first week.
